A mass community singing of the Cornish anthem every St Piran's Day March 5th

Are you ready for the Trelawny Shout 2022?

The Trelawny Shout refused to let a global pandemic stand in the way of a good old Cornish sing song. Last year, we took our collective voice online with a heart-warming video that led us all in the 9pm St Piran’s Day Shout – this year, we might just get to do it in person.

Join us on Facebook and Twitter

Our Facebook page is a lively place. Call it Trelawny Shout HQ – a place where pubs, clubs and communities come to declare themselves IN. Choirs pop by to offer to lead the singing in towns and villages all over Cornwall, individuals drop in to share Trelawny Shout news and info and generally share the love.

Joining in with the Trelawny Shout is a celebration of knowing Cornwall from the inside out. We love the mud as much as the sand, the fields as much as the beaches, the driving rain as much as the warming sunshine (well, okay, maybe not that one…). But there’s something very special in recognising our togetherness, and in wanting to say thanks to  this beautiful land of ours. Facebook is our virtual home, and our real home is where the heart is.

Come and join us. Like our page, let us know what your community is up to, and don’t forget to upload your photos and videos of the event itself. Our Twitter feed is a great resource too.

How It Works

It’s a very simple idea. A community network gets together  – a pub, a club, a local choir, a few strong singers, perhaps a local charity – to sing the iconic Cornish anthem Trelawny on St Piran’s Day at 9pm. The song is sung, the charity pot is filled, Cornwall raises its celebratory voice and the collective heart is warmed!

So, who is behind the Trelawny Shout?

The answer is one and all!

The tradition of ‘shouts’  – or informal singing ‘in the round’ in pubs  – has happened in Cornwall for centuries. The first Trelawny Shout was held much more recently though, in 2015.

Started by volunteers at the Cornwall Community Foundation, the event quickly grew and grew to become a favourite way of celebrating Cornish life on St Piran’s Day (always March 5th if you’re wondering!) for those lucky enough to live here.

The Trelawny Shout is now its own independent, joyously sprawling thing. Anyone can hold one, anyone can join in, and any charity can benefit.

One song, one night, but thousands of voices raising the roofs of pubs and venues up and down the land to celebrate Cornwall. ‘Tis a lovely thing!

YOU KNOW THE REASON WHY!

It’s about strengthening communities, celebrating our Cornish heritage and looking both forward and back. Taking an age-old tradition of pub singing to lift the soul and bring us together, raising funds for the charities Cornwall cares about most too.

From the smallest hamlet to our cathedral city, from far-flung harbours to busy town centres, from moorland to cliff – The Trelawny Shout is something to sing about !

Choirs

Cornwall is full of community choirs, male and female voice choirs, shanty singing groups, youth choirs, choirs attached to organisations and choirs that exist just for the fun of it.

Do you belong to one? Make sure your choir joins in!

Supporters

Support comes in all shapes and sizes. Schedules permitting, BBC Radio Cornwall broadcasts a live shout at 9pm so people at home can join in. Tiffany Truscott’s evening show (weekdays only) does St Piran’s Day proud.

Funding has come from FEAST Cornwall too – we couldn’t have met the 2020 challenge to raise 20,000 voices or made 2021’s lockdown video without it.

A big thank you to Venn Creative too for designing and building this website out of the kindest of their community hearts and long being committed supporters of the Trelawny Shout and all things Cornish.

Cornwall’s breweries and pub suppliers often come forward with discounted beer or donated pasties – if you’re putting on a charity event, it’s always worth asking.
